American Cancer Society representatives present Charlie Roth with an award Saturday morning in Salina.
Salina Representative Charlie Roth received a couple of awards Saturday morning. The American Cancer Society and Tobacco Free Kansas organizations both recognized him for his efforts in helping the statewide smoking ordinance in Kansas become law.
The ordinance bans smoking in restaurants, bars, offices and other public places. It specifically exempts state-owned and operated casinos, though.
Then Governor Mark Parkinson ceremoniously signed the legislation into law in Salina. At the time, he said that he chose Salina for a couple of reasons. Salina was the first community in Kansas to enact a smoking ban. The governor also said that Roth was instrumental in getting the statewide ban passed.
Health officials estimate that 4,000 Kansans die from smoking-related disease every year, about 300 through exposure to secondhand smoke.
Roth on Saturday credited a "grass-roots" effort in passage of the ordinance. He cautioned that right now in Topeka there is growing momentum to get the ban repealed. He said that the same "grass-roots" effort might be needed again to keep the ordinance in place.
State Representative Charlie Roth Named to the Higher Education
Honor Roll
SALINA, KS – Charlie Roth, the three-term state representative from Salina’s 71st district, was named to the 2009-10 Education Honor Roll by the Citizens for Higher Education, Inc. – a Lenexa-based group that promotes quality higher education as a means of economic growth.
The bi-annual report card recognized 24 State Senators and 69 Representatives, who scored an A or B based on a range of votes they cast involving tuition, funding, campus safety, appropriations, budgets, policy issues for Regents universities and community colleges, and more. Charlie Roth earned a 97 percent for votes he cast in favor of higher education in 2009-10; he has earned an 86-percent average for the past three years, according to the group.
The report card noted that 17 Senators received a D or F as did 52 State Representatives. The entire report card with individual vote records is available at www.kansashighereducation.org.
“We strongly endorse the re-election of Representative Charlie Roth who understands that there is an undisputed link between quality higher education and the long-term economic well-being of our state,” said Bill Hall, Chairman of Citizens for Higher Education. “Kansans who receive a quality post-secondary education earn more, pay more taxes, rely less on government programs and contribute more to their communities over their lifetimes. Plus, they are more likely to create jobs by starting and growing their own businesses. That’s why pro-higher education legislators deserve our endorsement and support in this year’s elections.”
Charlie Roth is running for re-election to the Kansas Legislature. The primary election is Tuesday, Aug. 3.
Citizens for Higher Education has produced report cards in the last three election cycles. For the first time this year it has released the lifetime higher education voting records of Kansas legislators. To contact the group, call 913-322-4345 or email Bill Musgrave. Citizens for Higher Education, Inc. is located at 12608 W. 85th Place, Lenexa, KS 66215.
